Lionel Messi Creating History For Inter Miami
Ex-PSG player, Lionel Messi has led his current team in MLS, Inter Miami, to their first-ever final in the history of the club. The renowned player, who is among the two major football players in the G.O.A.T. debate, defeated the Philadelphia Union recently in the semi-finals of the MLS League Cup.
The game’s early dominance was thanks to Messi, who saw that Inter Miami won with a scoreline of 4-1, advancing to the finals of the League Cup.
First Final in Miami’s History
Inter Miami is an American professional soccer club based in Florida. The club was established in 2018, and it began playing football in the Eastern Conference of Major League Soccer during the 2020 season.
The club, with just a four-year history, had never reached the final of any major tournament prior to the arrival of Lionel Messi.
Prior to the arrival of Messi from PSG, Inter Miami was at the bottom of the MLS Eastern Conference table. The club’s fortunes changed after the signing of the ex-Barça trio (Leo Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba), winning six out of their next six matches in the league cup.
Before this, the club had won just one game in its last ten matches.
Lionel Messi, Headlining Inter Miami’s Road to the Finals
Undoubtedly, Leo Messi was the main reason Inter Miami reached their first-ever final. Messi demonstrated his presence from the very first game in Inter Miami’s shirt.
In his debut match, a game attended by many of the best in American sports, such as NBA King Lebron James, Serena Williams, and David Beckham, Messi scored his first match-winning free-kick goal against Cruz Azul.
In the second game, Inter Miami defeated Atlanta United 4-0 with a brace from Messi and Robert Taylor. In order to progress to the final, Miami had to overcome Orlando City, FC Dallas, Charlotte FC, and Philadelphia Union in the Round of 32, Round of 16, Quarterfinal, and Semifinal, respectively.
During the knockout stage only, Leo Messi recorded a total of six goals, while Josef Martinez scored three.
Concacaf Champions Cup
With their victory over Philadelphia in the semifinal, Inter Miami has secured their place in the Concacaf Champions Cup 2024. Prior to recent events, Inter Miami had never participated in the Concacaf Champions Cup before.
Three places in the Concacaf Champions Cup were allocated to the top three teams in the league cup. Inter Miami and Nashville SC have already booked their places in the tournament, while the winners of the third-place playoff between Philadelphia Union and Monterrey, will also join them.
The winner of the league cup will directly advance to the Round of 16 of next year’s Concacaf Champions Cup.
The Final: Inter Miami vs. Nashville SC
Leo Messi will be aiming for his first trophy in the United States as Inter Miami faces Nashville SC in the final, this Sunday. The match will be like no other, as it could be the beginning of a new history for Miami as they win the League Cup for the first time since their inception.
The match will take place at Geodis Park in Nashville, and the game will kick off at 9 p.m. ET (8 p.m. local time, 6 p.m. PT).
