Newcastle records historic win at St. James Park

Newcastle United has just beaten the French champions Paris Saint Germain in their home in the second gameweek of UEFA Champions League by the scoreline of 4:1. This victory will be remembered for ages for Newcastle United as it is the first Champions League game at Newcastle’s home in last two decades. The last time Newcastle appeared in the Europe’s most prestigious club tournament in 2002/03.

Statement win vs PSG


PSG , often considered to be the European heavyweight suffered the unexpected humiliating defeat in Group F game against Newcastle United. Heading into the clash , PSG had already won a game against Borussia Dortmund where as Newcastle were settled for draw against AC Milan in the first gameweek.

Despite enjoying most of the possession of the match , PSG couldn’t capitalise the chances they received and suffered their first defeat of the UCL campaign. 29 year old Paraguayn striker , Almiron scored in the 17th minute to give a lead to Newcastle. Notably this was Newcastle United’s first goal in the UEFA Champions League since Alan Shearer in 2002/03. Newcastle doubled their lead six minutes before half time via English defender Joe Burn.

Newcastle United were two goals up against PSG heading toward second half. Trippier assisted Sean Longstaff in the minute fifty to add another goal for Newcastle in the game . Soon after conceding third goal of the night , Lucas Hernandez get a goal back for PSG in 56th minute. There was enough time for PSG to pull a comeback in the game . Newcastle United killed the game with their fourth goal of the night when Schar scored in the 90th minute of the match to secure the historic and convincing victory for Eddie Howe’s team.

Top of the Group of Death

Group F consisting of Paris Saint Germain , Broussia Dortmund , Ac Milan and Newcastle United has gained the title of ‘ Group of Death ‘ in this edition of Champions League. Each game in this group are important as all four sides look equally capable to make it through round of 16 .

Considering lack of experience , Newcastle United were considered to be the least favourite team in the group . But the table has completely turned in favour of English Club after the completion of second gameweek of UCL 2023/24. After the convincing 4:1 win over French club , Newcastle United with four points are top of the table . The other game of the group featuring Dortmund and Ac Milan finished in draw which resulted in Newcastle topping the Group of Death ahead of Luis Enrique’s side.
