last-minute equalizer broke winning streak of ronaldo’s al nassr
The 31-year-old former Lyon striker, Ekambi, scored in the dying minutes of the game to snatch a point from the Saudi Pro League fixture against Al Nassr. This strike from the Cameroonian ended Al Nassr’s ten-game winning streak.
After losing their first two games of the season, Al Nassr, inspired by Cristiano Ronaldo, Talisca, and Mane, went on to win 10 consecutive matches in all competitions, averaging an impressive 3.7 goals per match. This superb streak was broken when Al Nassr shared a point with Abha last night.
An early lead for Al Nassr
Al Nassr dominated the match from the very beginning. Within the first three minutes of the game, Otavio gave Al Nassr the lead with an assist from former Inter Milan captain Brozovic. Shortly after, Talisca doubled Al Nassr’s lead, thanks to an assist from Sadio Mane. This was Talisca’s fifth goal of the Saudi Pro League 2023/24. He was the league’s top scorer last season.
Al Nassr took a two-goal lead within the first half-hour of the game. Cristiano’s side looked comfortable and aimed for their 11th consecutive win. In the 36th minute of the game, Al Nassr conceded a penalty, and Saad Bguri didn’t make any mistake, reducing Al Nassr’s lead to one goal.
A comeback from Abha
Despite being a goal down and playing against a team full of former European professionals, Abha didn’t give up in the game. They appeared determined to steal a point from Al Nassr’s backyard. They defended very well and avoided conceding any further goals in the game. They finally found their equalizer in additional time when Ekambi scored a brilliant goal from outside the box. There was no time for further goals, so the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
Al Nassr in the table
Despite dropping two points against Abha, Al Nassr is only three points behind the top of the table. They are currently third in the table with 19 points from 9 matches, trailing only behind Al Taawoun (22 points) and Al Hilal (20 points). However, Al Hilal still has a game to play tonight.
On the same day that Al Nassr’s winning streak was broken, Al Ittihad, featuring Benzema and Kante, suffered a loss at the hands of Al Ahly. Frank Kessie scored the only goal of the game, securing all three points in the Jeddah Derby.
