The most successful player in the UEFA Champions League, Cristiano Ronaldo, is all set to compete in Champions League football once again after missing out last year. Cristiano Ronaldo, aka Mr. Champions League, will be making his return to Champions League football this year with Al Nassr. He is set to compete in the AFC Champions League this season after a playoff win over the UAE’s Shabab Al Ahli.
AFC Champions League playoff
After finishing second in the Saudi Pro League 2022–23 behind Al Ittihad and failing to win the King’s Cup, Al Nassr were forced to play a Champions League playoff to decide whether or not they would play in the AFC Champions League. They played against Shabab Al Ahli in the playoffs in their home game last night.
Al Nassr was on the brink of elimination from the playoff round of Champions League football after trailing by two goals to one in the 88th minute. But thanks to three late goals, Al Nassr completed their comeback and secured their place in the Champions League. The match finished 4:2 in favor of the Saudi side, thanks to late goals from Sultan Al-Ghannam, Talisca, and Brozovic.
What’s Next for Cristiano and Al Nassr?
Now, Al Nassr has qualified for the group stage of the AFC Champions League 2023/24. They will be placed with four other teams in the group stage. They will be competing against 39 other Asian teams. Forty teams will be placed in ten groups, with each group consisting of four teams. The winners from the ten groups and the six best runners-up will move on to the next round, the Round of 16, and so on.
Al Nassr in the AFC Champions League
Despite being Asian heavyweights, Al Nassr has never won the AFC Champions League. With the arrival of Cristiano and several other superstars from European leagues, Al Nassr will be dreaming big this time and aiming for the prestigious AFC Champions League. Al Nassr’s best finish in the competition came in 1995 when they finished second behind the Korean team IIhwa Chunma.
Ronaldo’s Return to Champions League
After conquering the Champions League football of the European Federation, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, Cristiano Ronaldo, is looking forward to marking his presence in the Asian Federation’s Champions League football this season with Al Nassr. However, winning the AFC Champions League will not be easy with the inclusion of teams like Al Ittihad, Al Hilal, Urawa Red Diamonds, and so on.
Al Nassr’s qualification for the AFC Champions League also marks Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Champions League football after missing out last season with Manchester United. The winner of this tournament will represent the AFC in the next Club World Cup and also participate in the Club World Cup of 2025.
